Christ Was Faithful As a Son

This meditation is based on a passage for March 15, 2011 in the Daily Lectionary Year 1 from the Book of Common Worship for the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) (1993).

Text: Hebrews 3:1-11

Reflection and Question: In this passage, the writer of Hebrews contrasts Moses and Jesus in a way that confirms Jesus as God’s Son. Even though Moses was faithful as a servant, Jesus is worthy of more glory as the Son. Then begins a sermon based on Psalm 95:7-11 that extends beyond our passage today. Like a preacher who modifies a memorized text, this writer changes the words slightly and rightly attributes these nuances to the Holy Spirit. But the warning is the same here as in the psalm: if you rebel against God, then God will reject you. How are you faithful to God, dwelling in Christ?

Prayer: Holy Spirit, You spoke directly to Moses, Your beloved servant, and to Jesus, Your beloved Son. Soften our hearts so that we may not go astray in our hearts. Teach us Your ways so that Your anger may not burn toward us. Find us faithful. Amen.
